According to research, minority women are disproportionately affected by cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, African American women experience more illnesses and worse outcomes from a cancer diagnosis than any other racial/ethnic group. African American women face greater obstacles to cancer detection, prevention, treatment, and survival. Social behaviors, environmental exposures, and economic limitations are all factors that influence and perpetuate these cancer diagnosis and treatment disparities. These negative disparities are being addressed by many community-based and wellness organizations.

Although there are many well-known cancer-focused organizations throughout the United States, the need for community- based organizations that provide resources and education to all women impacted by cancer, particularly women living in minority communities, remains a priority. Additionally, because of the rise in cancer rates throughout the world, education and resources surrounding living healthy before, during, and after a cancer diagnosis require a discussion on treatments involving both traditional and integrative alternatives to treatment.
